Macau’s hotel occupancy rate reached 81.5% in 2023, representing an increase of 43.1 percentage points compared with the previous year according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
With the total number of hotel establishments rising by 19 year-on-year to 142 – and the number of guest rooms rising by 23.5% to 47,000 – 2-star hotel rooms enjoyed the highest occupancy rate at 85.1%, followed by 5-star rooms at 82.5%.
Macau’s hotels welcomed 13.57 million guests for the full year, up 170% compared with 2022 and recovering to 96.2% of 2019 levels, DSEC said.
The majority of hotel guests in 2023 were from mainland China, which contributed 9,844,000 hotel stays, while Hong Kong travelers contributed 2,219,000 stays and Taiwanese guests 256,000 stays.
The number of local residents staying in hotels in Macau dropped by 39.4% year-on-year and the average length of stay in 2023 also decreased by 0.1 nights to 1.7 nights.
The FY23 total included a hotel occupancy rate of 85.9% in December, up 43.1 percentage points year-on-year, while the number of occupants in December was approximately 1.33 million.
Tour group numbers in 2023 reached 1.28 million, while the number of Macau residents who purchased outbound travel services through travel agencies increased by 800% year-on-year to 418,000.
In December, there were 160,000 tour group arrivals, while the number of Macau residents who purchased outbound travel services through travel agencies increased by 810% year-on-year to 53,000.
