The Macau government generated MOP$5.7 billion (US$706 million) in gaming tax revenue in May, up 418% on the MOP$1.1 billion (US$136 million) reported for the same month last year and 15.2% higher than in April, according to figures from the Financial Services Bureau.
The improvement reflects rapidly rising gaming revenues across Macau’s land-based casino industry, with GGR climbing each and every month since January’s reopening to reach MOP$14.72 (US$1.82 billion) in April and MOP$15.57 billion (US$1.93 billion) in May. The May tax figure is related to April GGR.
Gaming tax revenue for the first five months of 2023 reached MOP$20.8 billion (US2.58 billion), up 83.6% year-on-year. It also represents 40.8% of the government’s budget of MOP$50.85 billion (US$6.30 billion) for FY23.
Total revenue generated by the government through May sits at MOP$26.2 billion (US$3.25 billion), meaning gaming tax has contributed 79.4% of Macau-wide income for the period.
