Just five of 275 new applications for Macau residency were approved in 2022, according to figures published this week by the Macao Trade Investment and Promotion Institute (IPIM).
The figures show that 98.2% of all applications last year were rejected, with just 1.8% accepted – all of them in the December 2022 quarter.
The results included nine applications in the first six months of the year, all of which were rejected, rising to 26 applications in 3Q22 which were also universally rejected.
In 4Q22, IPIM processed 240 applications and approved five while rejecting 235. The five successful applications were comprised of three in the education field, one in financial services and one listed as “other”, which includes accounting, legal services, other commercial and services industries.
There were no successful applications in the fields of Entertainment and Gaming or Hotel and Dining.
