Wynn Resorts Limited announced this afternoon that Ian Michael Coughlan, President of Wynn Macau Limited, has decided to no longer continue as President after his current contract concludes on 28 February 2023. Instead, Mr Coughlan will transition to an advisor to the company until the end of 2023. He will also remain on the Board as a non-executive Director until the next annual general meeting, expected to occur in May next year.
Wynn Macau Limited Vice Chairman Linda Chen will assume the role of President of Wynn Macau Limited from 1 March 2023, in addition to her role as Vice Chairman.
Craig Billings, Chief Executive Officer of Wynn Resorts Limited and Wynn Macau Limited, said, “Ian’s pioneering leadership, which spans the vast majority of our incredibly successful time in Macau, has been impressive and his unrelenting commitment to brand excellence and establishing our deep-rooted culture are equally remarkable. I’m pleased that he has agreed to continue as a consultant to the Company and on our Board of Directors.
“Linda’s leadership throughout the many phases of our development in Macau has been important to our success. She will work with Ian to ensure a smooth transition, and I look forward to working closely with Linda and our talented management team in the years ahead.”
Mr Coughlan has featured on the annual Asian Gaming Power 50 list of the 50 most influential figures in the Asian gaming industry for many years, most recently at number 17 in both 2020 and 2021. Renowned for being the strategically low profile behind-the-scenes engine relentlessly driving the impressive service culture and ultra-luxury offering the Wynn brand has become famous for, he first joined the company in January 2007 after leading the iconic Peninsula hotels in Bangkok and Hong Kong.
Often described as the “defender of the Wynn luxury brand,” Mr Coughlan’s meticulous attention to detail and reserved nature contrasted with that of his former boss and company founder Steve Wynn, whose departure in 2018 did not affect Mr Coughlan’s position. On the contrary, subsequent Las Vegas-based Wynn CEOs Matt Maddox and Craig Billings relied heavily on Mr Coughlan’s vast operational experience accumulated over his 15 years with Wynn Macau.
His leadership roles within the company grew consistently over his tenure, ultimately becoming President of Wynn Macau Limited upon the departure of Gamil Aziz in October 2016, barely two months after the opening of Wynn’s Cotai resort, Wynn Palace. Mr Coughlan is credited with quickly and successfully reshaping the Wynn Palace offering to better suit the rapidly changing Macau market landscape at that time.
His charismatic and battle-hardened leadership qualities will be a hard ask to replace.
