The name of Chan Meng Kam inevitably appears whenever speculative conversation turns to which local operators might conceivably bid for a seventh Macau casino license. Certainly his considerable portfolio of assets and political connections are not to be ignored.

One of the SAR’s wealthiest businessmen, Chan’s Golden Dragon Group operates Casino Golden Dragon, Royal Dragon and Casino Million Dragon – all of them running gaming operations under the license of SJM Holdings. It also operates Grand Dragon Casino in Taipa under Melco Resorts’ license.

Such hectic business activity may be one of the reasons why Chan Meng Kam decided to step aside from his successful political career in 2017.

The Macau government recognized Chan’s long history with the city by honoring him with the Golden Lotus award in December 2018. The award highlights individuals or entities that have made outstanding contributions to the image and reputation of the MSAR.

His links with the Chinese central government and influence over the powerful Fujian community in Macau have positioned Chan as a key personality in the development of Macau over the last decade.
