Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has put one of three key bills currently under consideration in the upper house on the backburner in a move designed to aid progress of its two higher priority pieces of legislation, including the IR Implementation Bill.
According to local media reports, the LDP and coalition partner Komeito have temporarily shelved a bill that would aid the implementation of a revised Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in order to avoid further conflict with opposition parties. The government is reportedly fearful that debate over the bill could negatively impact its two priority bills – the IR bill and another covering work-style reform.
News of the decision to shelve the TPP bill provides another boost to the gaming industry after the LDP last week extended the current Diet session – originally due to expire on 20 June – through to 22 July 2018.
The IR Implementation Bill passed through the lower house earlier this month, paving the way for the nation’s first integrated resorts.
