According to reports, the Macau government intends to build an outdoor concert venue for 50,000 people on a piece of land adjacent to SJM’s Grand Lisboa Palace.
At the Legislative Assembly’s Question and Answer Session on 16 April, Macau Chief Executive, Ho Iat Seng, said he planned to look for a site in Taipa capable of hosting concerts for 50,000 people. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong also stated at the time that such a venue could be located close to an integrated resort.
On Thursday, Macau’s TDM Portuguese radio reported that the venue would be built on a piece of land close to Grand Lisboa Palace that is currently undeveloped.
According to TDM, the land has already been cleared in preparation for the construction of a large-scale performance venue.
Korean K-pop group Seventeen held concerts at Macau’s Taipa Stadium on 20 and 21 January this year, but the event received multiple noise and traffic complaints from nearby residents.
The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture subsequently announced the establishment of a governmental inter-departmental group to review the incident and to find a suitable piece of land in for large-scale outdoor performances.
Last year, the government and concessionaires co-operated to hold a concert for nearly 20,000 people on the reclaimed land alongside Macau Tower, and the area has since been designated by as a temporary site for future performances with a capacity of 20,000 people.
