The President of the Macao Sports Bureau said Sunday that the city’s six concessionaires have now submitted to the government their plans for organizing local sporting events, including major tournaments such as golf and tennis.

Investment in sports tourism was one of the government’s key criteria during the re-tendering for 10-year gaming concessions last year, with Pun Weng Kun confirming, “The six concessionaires have now submitted their plans to the government for organizing sports competitions and will announce them after coordinating with the government.”

Revealing that major events such as international golf and tennis tournaments formed part of those plans, he added, “I believe the participation of large enterprises in sports events will increase the effectiveness of the events and attract more visitors to Macau, so that the public can also enjoy the high-level events.”

As previously reported by IAG, Macau’s concessionaires had been given until March to submit their planning reports for sporting events. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ao Ieong U, pointed out that “many of Macau’s tournaments are becoming market-oriented, and in the future some major sports events will be hosted by large organizations.”

The concessionaires are, however, no stranger to hosting large scale events with all six having long sponsored the Macau Grand Prix. Sands China will also host the Macao International 10k run next weekend.
