WHEN DAISY HO announced in July the long-awaited opening of Grand Lisboa Palace, SJM’s Cotai integrated resort, she was escorted by Angela Leong and Dr Ambrose So – a symbolic image of the key characters shaping the legacy of company founder, the late Dr Stanley Ho.
Even now, with so much conjecture over what the future might look like for this hugely significant company in Macau’s history, the daughter, wife and life-long brother-in-arms of Stanley Ho continue to turn the company’s wheels.
Active since 1976 within SJM’s predecessor and majority owner STDM, Dr So’s diplomacy and savoir faire might have proved key for the survival of the company after Dr Ho’s health issues prevented him from playing an active role in the company’s affairs during the years preceding his 2020 passing.
The opening of SJM’s footprint in Cotai represents the coronation of a company that transformed a city. And while Dr So may be nearing the twilight years of his distinguished career, his experience and contacts could prove crucial in the coming months as license re-tendering comes to the forefront.
Dr So remains a familiar face in the SJM legacy and it is only fitting that he gets to witness the next phase in the company’s story with the launch of Grand Lisboa Palace.
