Macau’s hotels and guesthouses recorded an average occupancy rate of 83.2% during the recent May Golden Week, representing a 34.6 percentage point increase over the 2021 Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday period in February.
The improvement reflects a surge in visitation from mainland China last week, with the government confirming Friday that 167,000 visitors entered the SAR between 1 and 5 May at an average of 33,000 per day – 25.4% higher than April and 158.2% higher than CNY. The figures, was, however, still represented only 21% of the 158,000 visitors to enter Macau each day during May Golden Week in 2019.
Nevertheless, statistics supplied by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) revealed that 5-star hotels achieved 84.8% occupancy last week, up 33.8 percentage points compared with CNY, and 4-star hotels a 79.6% occupancy rate, up 29.7 percentage points. The average occupancy rate of 3-Star hotels was 86.6%, up 41.4 percentage points.
Average room rates remained relatively stable compared to CNY at MOP$1,264 with 5-star rooms averaging MOP$1,476 and 4-star rooms averaging MOP$886.
