Chum spent 14 years at UBS where he oversaw Asian gaming research from 2006 to 2013 while also heading China equity research in Shanghai from 2007 to 2010. The Oxford honors graduate eventually moved back home to Hong Kong to lead equity research there but it was perhaps inevitable that one of the big guns of the global gaming scene would come calling. Originally appointed Senior Vice President for Global Gaming Strategy, based in Asia, he was named Sands China’s Chief of Staff in 2015, then promoted to Chief Operating Officer in February 2020. But his seniority has become even more apparent since the passing of company founder Sheldon Adelson in January. Chum is now a regular on LVS’s quarterly earnings calls and the first person tapped for comment when discussions inevitably turn to Macau, exhibiting an in-depth knowledge of the company’s operations and of the regional gaming and luxury market. He has also replaced LVS Chairman and CEO Rob Goldstein this year on Sands China’s Capital Expenditure Committee, giving him direct say on all non-budgeted capital expenditure projects whose value exceeds US$10 million. Not bad for a 46-year-old, whose star looks set to keep rising.
