Under the terms of its land concession with the Macau SAR Government, Melco is required to complete development of Studio City Phase 2 by 31 May 2022, having already extended the deadline once from its original date of 24 July 2019. In an SEC filing, the company said there is now “no guarantee” it will complete the development of the remaining land of Studio City by the deadline. “Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, we estimated a construction period of approximately 32months for the remaining project,” Melco said. “With the disruptions from the Covid-19 outbreak, the construction period has been delayed and is expected to extend beyond the estimated 32 months and the current development period. “In the event that additional time is required to complete the development of the remaining project for Studio City, we will have to apply for an extension of the relevant development period which shall be subject to Macau government review and approval at its discretion.” Melco also cited a need to raise considerably more funding to complete development of Phase 2, some of which will come from a private placement to current shareholders announced in mid-July.
