Macau recorded nearly 6,685,000 visitor arrivals during this year’s summer holidays (1 July to 31 August), with a daily average of 108,000, according to latest data from the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).
This means that visitor arrivals to Macau during the summer holiday period recovered to 93.4% of the 7,153,000 arrivals during the same period in 2019.
August was particularly strong, with the number of visitor arrivals this year reaching around 3,663,000 at a daily average of 118,000 and with a one-day high of nearly 167,000 on 24 August. The overall visitor situation in August actually exceeded that of August 2019.
For international visitors, the summer holidays saw 336,000 arrivals at a daily average of 5,423, up 29.8% year-on-year and back to 75.6% of pre-COVID levels.
This was reflected in gross gaming revenues, with the DICJ reporting Sunday GGR of MOP$19.8 billion (US$2.47 billion) – reflecting the highest recovery rate since the end of the outbreak at more than 81.5% of 2019 levels.
However, industry analysts have predicted that gross gaming revenues are likely to weaken in September, described as the “Shoulder Season” between the summer holidays and October’s Golden Week.
