Macau’s Public Security Police Force has revealed that a total of 136,647 visitors arrived in Macau during Golden Week (30 April to 4 May), with a daily average of 27,329 visitors.
The Macao Government Tourism Office also announced late Thursday that Macau’s average hotel occupancy rate had also reached 59.5%, aided by the 41,544 visitor arrivals last Saturday – the highest single day tally of 2022 so far.
However, Macau Travel Industry Council president, Andy Wu Keng Kuong, told Inside Asian Gaming that many hotels would have recorded occupancy rates of 70% or higher during Golden Week. In particular he noted that Macau’s integrated resorts attracted more tourists, stating, “the average hotel occupancy rate of these would be 60% to 70%, and some individual hotels may even reach 80%.”
On 4 May there were 34,053 outgoing visitors, compared to 20,040 visitor arrivals, with video footage doing the rounds of social media showing huge crowds at the Border Gate that evening. Police officers were ultimately deployed to divert the flow of people. Wu said, “From the past two days there was a rapid increase in outgoing visitors, indicating that more tourists chose to stay in Macau overnight [as opposed to day-trippers], and some even stayed for more than one night.”
He also mentioned that the MGTO has launched a Macau hotel promotion program for the mainland Chinese market, meaning the longer visitors stay, the cheaper hotel rates will be.
According to information from the MGTO, the average daily room rate of hotel establishments during Golden Week grew 17.9% over the April average to MOP$885.
Nevertheless, recent outbreaks of COVID-19 on the mainland, including a high-profile outbreak at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, had kept numbers more subdued than they may otherwise have been with the final visitor tally down by 18% on 2021 May Golden Week numbers.
