The average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotel rooms in January 2022 was 44.0%, slightly up on the same month in 2021 but down 10.8 percentage points when compared to December, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The more subdued rate was due to a tightening of border control measures between Zhuhai and Macau during the final few weeks of the month which slowed the encouraging visitation numbers seen in late December and early January. As a result, overnight visitors fell by 38.1% month-on-month.
The number of hotel guests in January rose by 14.2% year-on-year to 515,000, with guests from mainland China up 10.8% to 418,000 and local guests up by 40.5% to 68,000. The average length of stay of guests grew by 0.1 nights year-on-year to 1.8 nights.
DSEC previously announced a 15.4% month-on-month decline in visitor arrivals to Macau in January to 694,430.
