The average occupancy rate of Macau’s hotels grew 15.2% year-on-year to 63.8% during Chinese New Year, however the average room rate charged was well down on the prior year period as travel restrictions across parts of mainland China continue to bite.
Information from the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) shows the average occupancy rate of 5-Star hotels reached 70.3% during 7-day Lunar New Year holiday period, up 19.3 percentage points versus CNY in 2021.
The average occupancy rate of 4-Star hotels was a more modest 53.5%, up 3.6 percentage points while 3-Star hotels grew 14.0 percentage points to 59.2% and 2-star hotels by 9.2 percentage points to 31.6%.
The average occupancy rate of apartment hotels was 60.0%, down 6.8 percentage points, and the average occupancy rate of “economical accommodation establishments” up by 13.1 percentage points to 44.1%.
Their combined 63.8% occupancy rate compared favorably with the 54.7% rate of Macau’s hotels and guesthouses in December 2021.
While occupancy rates were up, average room rates fell 11.8% year-on-year during CNY to MOP$1,096.
The average room rates of 5-Star and 4-Star hotels were around MOP$1,191 and MOP$643 respectively, down 18.4% and 12.4%, while the rates of 3-Star and 2-Star hotels were MOP$580 and MOP$190, down 19.5% and 8.5% respectively.
