Melco Resorts & Entertainment has announced plans to co-organize the World University Cyber League 2021, an eSports event it says will help promote the government’s efforts towards economic diversification.
The event will be jointly held at Melco’s Studio City and in Hengqin New Area under a “one game, two places” model after the company took part in a contract signing ceremony at Hengqin International Business Centre earlier this week. The event’s co-host is Tencent Sports.
Melco had previously partnered with digital entertainment platform Garena to host the League of Legends Master Series (LMS) – Spring Final in 2018, followed by the GBA Sim Racing Grand Prix last year.
“We collaborated with CCTV late last year to host the GBA Sim Racing Grand Prix 2020 – The National Final for the first time in Macau at City of Dreams, drawing the attention of eSports fans from across the country,” said Melco director Clarence Chung.
“We are pleased to now co-organize the World University Cyber League 2021 – Finals with Tencent Sports and look forward to bringing another wonderful international eSports event to the city to support Macau’s economic diversification.”
Mr Fu Hanrong, Deputy Head of the Zhuhai Liaison Department of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR; Mr Chao Kuok Wai, Head of Sports Development Department, Sports Bureau of Macau SAR Government; and Mr Wu Chuangwei, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Hengqin New Area of Zhuhai, were all in attendance at this week’s ceremony.
