The World Poker Tour has announced that it will hold its first ever WPT main tour event in Australia in September, part of three new WPT festivals scheduled to take place at The Star Gold Coast over the next 14 months.
The inaugural WPT Australia main event will be an AU$5,400 buy-in tournament starting on 2 October 2020, part of the second annual WPT Australia festival kicking off on 24 September. The maiden WPT Australia festival was held last September, attracting a field of 658 players to the main event. However, last year’s tournament was not a WPT main tour event.
Aside from being the first WPT main tour event ever held in the country, WPT Australia will also be just the second in Asia-Pacific following the recent announcement of WPT Cambodia, to be held at NagaWorld this July.
“The World Poker Tour’s relationship with The Star Gold Coast continues to blossom and these three festivals will only add more reasons for our loyal players to visit this poker hotbed,” said Angelica Hael, VP of Global Tour Management for the WPT.
“It brings me great joy to see poker continue to thrive in my native country and bring the WPT Champions Cup to Australia in Season XIX.”
Also on the WPT’s 2020 schedule for the first time will be the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast from 30 April to 4 May, featuring an AU$1,500 buy-in main event, while the event will return again next year from 23 April to 3 May 2021.
