Macau gaming operator Sands China Ltd has banned shark fin from its restaurants.
The company revealed in a press announcement on Tuesday that the ban came into effect as of 1 January 2019 and covers all food and beverage outlets – both internal and external – located at any of its Macau integrated resorts.
The initiative is part of Sands ECO360, the global sustainability strategy of Sands China’s parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp, which aims to incorporate responsible business operations in the areas of green buildings, environmentally responsible operations, green meetings and events, and stakeholder engagement and outreach.
“This shark fin ban reflects our company’s firm commitment to continue reducing the environmental impact of our operations,” said Sands China’s SVP of Resort Operations and Development, Mark McWhinnie.
“As a leader in our industry, we hope our actions inspire and encourage our customers and business partners in their own sustainability efforts in Macau and in the region.”
Sands China’s recent green initiatives have included a company-wide ban on the use of plastic straws, which also came into effect this year.
