Zheng Xiaosong, the head of the Macau Liaison Office, has died after falling from an apartment block over the weekend.
The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office announced Zheng’s death on Sunday, suggesting that he had taken his own life as a result of depression.
The 59-year-old only took on the top job at the Macau Liaison Office last year when he replaced Wang Zhimin as the local representative of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China.
Zheng previously worked for the Foreign Ministry and for the Fujian provincial government.
